What are the characteristics of Bipolar Affective Disorders?
- alternating periods of depression and mania
- females are at greater risk; typically begins in a patient’s 20s
What are the characteristics of Depression Affective Disorders?
- slower mental and physical activity; poor self esteem
- immobilized from everyday activity with sadness, hopelessness, and helplessness
- desire to withdraw; delusion in severe cases
What are the characteristics of Mania Affective Disorders?
- constantly active
- impulses immediately expressed
- unrealistic activity
- elation and self-confidence
- disorganized thought and speech
What are dissociative Disorders?

develop when a person unconsciously dissociates one part of the mind from the rest

What is Psychogenic Amnesia?
- produced by the mind with no physical cause
- forgets all aspects of the past
What are Neuroses Disorders?
a group of disorders that are characterized by individuals exhibiting fear and maladaptive strategies in dealing with stressful or everyday stimuli

What is borderline behavior?
- instability in all aspects of life
- uses projection, denial, defensiveness; unpredictable mood or behavior
- intense and uncontrolled anger, chronic feelings of emptiness
What is Narcissistic Behavior?
- Self absorbed
- incapable of loving others
- unrealistic perception of self-importance
What is Psychopathic Personality?
- low morality, poor sense of responsibility
- impulsive behavior for immediate gratification
- little guilt or remorse for all actions
- inability to alter behavior even with punishment
- expert liar
What are Schizophrenic Disorders?
disorders that are psychotic in nature and present with disorganization of thought, hallucinations, emotional dysfunction, anxiety, and perceptual impairments
What is Catatonic Schizophrenia?
- motor disturbances with rigid posture
- episodes consist on uncontrolled movements but patient remains aware during episodes
- medication is required to regulate episodes
What is Disorganized Schizophrenia?
-usually progressive and irreversible with inappropriate emotional responses; mumbled talking
