Gastrointestinal Anatomy Flashcards
What are the structures of the upper GI tract?
Mouth
Esophagus
Stomach
What are the structures of the Lower GI Small Intestine from proximal to distal from the stomach?
Duodenum
Jejunum
Ileum
What is the job of the duodenum in the small intestine?
neutralizes acid in food from the stomach and mixes pancreatic and biliary secretion with food
What is the job of the jejunum in the small intestine?
absorbs water, electrolytes, and nutrients
What is the job of the ileum in the small intestine?
absorbs bile and intrinsic factors to be recycled
What are the sections of the Large intestine in the lower GI tract?
Ascending Colon Transverse Colon Descending Colon Sigmoid Colon Rectum Anus
What is the job of the large intestine?
continue to absorb water and electrolytes, stores and eliminates undigested food as feces
What is the job of the gallbladder?
Stores and releases bile into the duodenum to assist with digestion
What is the job of the liver in the GI system?
bile is produced and is necessary for absorption of lipid soluble substances, assists with red blood cell and vitamin K production, regulates serum level of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats
What is the job of the pancreas in the GI system?
Exocrine-secretes bicarbonate and digestive enzymes into the duodenum
Endocrine- secretes insulin, glucagon, and other hormones into the blood to regulate serum glucose level
