Genitourinary Anatomy Flashcards
What muscles make up the pelvic diaphragm?
levator ani, pubococcygeus, puborectalis, iliococcygeus, and coccygeus (ischiococcygeus)
What structures make up the urogenital diaphragm?
deep transverse perineal, urethrae sphincter
What structures make up the anal triangle?
internal and external anal sphincter
What is the role of each structure of the female genital system?
External genitalia Vagina Uterus Uterine Tubes Ovaries
Ext. Genitalia-provide protection and hydration of vaginal tissue and urethra
Vagina-receptacle for sperm, birth canal, excretory duct for menstrual fluid
Uterus-houses the fetus during development
Uterine Tubes-provides transport for the ovum from the ovary for fertilization and implantation within the uterus
Ovaries- produce hormones such as estrogen and progesterone and storage of oocytes prior to ovulation
What is the role of each structure of the male genital system?
Penis Scrotum Testes Ductus/vas deferens Epididymis Seminal Vesicles Prostate
Penis-external genitalia that expels urine and semen
Scrotum-sac for testes, ductus deferens, epididymis, nerves, and blood vessels
Testes-produce sperm and hormones such as testosterone
Vas Deferens-carries sperm from the testes to the seminal vesicle to form the ejaculatory duct
Epididymis-stores sperm
Seminal Vesicles-internal tubes that secrete fluid that mixes with sperm in ejaculatory duct
Prostate- produces and secretes fluid to combine with sperm, seminal vesicle fluid, and bulbourethral gland to create sperm
What is the role of kidneys in the renal system?
- remove water, salt, and metabolic waste from the blood through excretion of urine
- contributes to homeostasis
What is the role of ureters in the renal system?
muscular tubes connecting the kidneys to the urinary bladder to transport urine
What is the role of the urinary bladder in the renal system?
temporary muscular reservoir for urine
What is the role of the urethra in the renal system?
excretion of urine (and semen in males)
