pantoprazole expected effect
suppress gastric secretions by inhibiting H/K ATPase enzyme system in gastric parietal cell. Gastric acid inhibitor bc blocks final step of acid production
why use pantoprazole
GERD, severe erosive esophagitis, pathologic hypersecretion (Zollinger- Ellison)
pantoprazole adverse effects
headache, insomnia, fatigue diarrhea, abdominal pain, flatulence myalgia, rhabdomyolysis Stevems Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, angioedema weight gain/ loss, hyperglycemia
pantoprazole route of admin
PO, NG, IV
pantoprazole nursing implications
- watch for hypersensitivity
- serious skin disorders
- precaution for breast feeding, pregnant, children
- rhabdomyolysis (muscle pain, ^ CPK)

GERD PO 40mg/ day
erosive esophagitis IV & PO 40mg/day
hypersecretory conditions PO 40mg BID, IV 80mg q12h, max 240mg/day
ulcers 40mg BID
