Beta Blockers Flashcards
Sotalol trade name
betapace
sotalol drug classification
beta blocker, antidysrhythmic group 3
sotalol expected effect
block beta 1/ 2 receptors leading to antidysrhythmic effect, prolong action potential. prolong QT interval
sotalol why use
ventricular dysrhythmias, maintain sinus rhythm with atrial fibrillation/ flutter
sotalol doses
80mg bid up to 240-320mg
ventricular dysrhythmias 75mg/ day
sotalol route admin
PO
sotalol adverse effects
prolong QT, CHF, ventricular dysrhythmias, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, agranulocytosis, bronchospasm
sotalol nursing considerations
- requires specialized care setting (ECG monitoring)
- do not abrupt discontinue, adjust doses slowly
- QT syndrome (monitor ECG, pulses)
teach - report symptoms CHF
nadolol trade names
corgard, syn-nadol
nadolol drug class
beta adrenergic receptor blocker
nadolol expected effect
beta blocker, blocks beta 1 in heart, beta 2 in lungs, uterus, circ system. Reduces effects like hormones (EP) on heart & reduces BP
nadolol why use
chronic stable angina pectoris
hypertension
nadolol route admin
PO
nadolol dosages
40/day, may ^ to 40-240mg/day angina & 40-320 for hypertension
nadolol adverse reactions
CHF, AV block, pancreatitis, agranulocytosis, thrombocytopenia, bronchospasm, pulmonary edema
nadolol black box warning
abrupt discontinuation results in MI, ischemia, dysrhythmias, hypertension, withdraw slowly
nadolol nursing considerations
BP, pulse, respiration, watch for orthostatic hypotension
metoprolol trade names
Nu-Metop, Lopressor, Troprol XL
metoprolol drug classification
beta blocker, antihypertensive, antianginal
metoprolol expected effect
lowers blood pressure by blocking beta & reducing high renin levels
metoprolol why use
hypertension, MI, angina, heart failure, cardiomyopathy
metoprolol doses
see paper
metoprolol routes of admin
PO, IV
metoprolol black box warning
abrupt discontinuation > may cause MI, dysrhythmias, ischemia
metoprolol adverse effects
bradycardia, cardiac arrest, AV block, edema, angina, agranulocytosis, eosinophilia, thrombocytopenia, purport, bronchospasm
metoprolol nursing considerations
BP, renal hepatic studies, take after meals & bedtime to prevent orthostatic hypotension
therapeutic response: lower BP & angina
