Properties Of Water Flashcards
Why H2O Polaris?
One end of the molecule possesses a positive charge however the opposite end possess and negative charge.
What is the meaning of hydrophilic?
It dissolves in water, and is Polaris molecule e.g., salt
What is a hydrophobic molecule?
Something that does not dissolve in water, non Polaris, e.g., oils/ lipids
What is a universal solvent of life? Why?
Able to dissolve many solutes
How to create a solution with a solute (NaCl) and solvent (H2O)?
Water begin polar the negative and positive parts of water molecule will attract to the negative or positive part of solute and separate them allowing it to dissolve.
What can water help travel? 3
Glucose, urea, transports molecules
What is the bonding between the water molecules? Week or strong!
Hydrogen bonding, week
What is also on the surface of water? Allowing what?
Hydrogen bonds, allowing surface tension
What is the deference between adhesion and cohesion?
Adhesion= attracted to other substances
Cohesion=water molecules attracted to other water molecules
Define specific heat capacity
The amount of heat energy needed to raise the on gram of water by 1 Celsius
What is the maximum hydrogen bond of water molecules?
4
Why water expand when freezing?
Because oxygen and hydrogen atoms attracts to form a lattice with a gap of space. Therefore it expands because the molecules need more space.
What happens when the volume of the water increases when freezing/frozen?
The density decreases therefore it floats to the top.
