5.7 Respiration Flashcards
What is respiration?
-release energy from..
-ATP is hyd..
Release energy from stored glucose, the energy is used to synthesize ATP from ADP and Pi. ATP is hydrolyzed to release energy.
What do living organisms use energy for.
-Processes such as:
• Active transport
• Endo/exocytosis
• Synthesis of large molecules e.g., proteins
•DNA replication
•Movement
•Cell division
What is catabolic and anabolic reactions?
Catabolic: The metabolic reactions involving the hydrolysis of large molecules to smaller ones.
Anabolic: Metabolic reactions where large molecules are synthesized from smaller ones.
Describe the structure of ATP
- Adenosine (base)
- Sugar (ribose)
- 3 phosphate groups
What is the bond between the ribose sugar and the phosphate group called?
Phosphodiester bond
What is the bond between the phosphate group called?
Phosphoanhydride bond
