- Potentiates effects of narcotics to induce analgesia

Indications
A
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Motion sickness
- Sedation for pt’s in labor
- Potentiation of analgesic effects of narcotics

Contraindications
A
- Hypersensitivity
- Coma
- CNS depressed pt’s from:
- alcohol
- barbiturates
- narcotcs
- Reye’s syndrome

Adverse reactions
A
- Sedation
- Dizziness
- Impairment of mental & physical ability
- Arrhythmias
- N/V
- Hyperexcitability
- Hallucinations
- Convulsions
- Sudden death when used in children

Drug Interactions
A
- Additive with other CNS depressants
- Increased extrapyramidal effects with MAOI’s

Dosage
A
- Adult:
- 12.5 - 25 mg IV, deep IM, PO, rectally
- Ped (greater than 2 yo):
- 0.25 - 0.5 mg/kg IM

Duration of action
A
- Onset IV: Immediate
- Peak: 30-60 min
- Duration: 4-6 hrs

Special Considerations
A
- Preg Cat: C
- Use caution in pt’s that have:
- asthma
- peptic ulcer disease
- bone marrow suppression
- Do not use in children with vomiting of unknown etiology
- Avoid-intra-arterial injection
- IM is preferred route
