A
- Competitive inhibition at narcotic receptor sites
- Reverse respiratory depression secondary to opiate drugs
- Completely inhibits the effect of morphine

Indications
A
- Opiate OD
- Coma
- Complete or partial reversal of CNS and respiratory depression induced by opiods
- Decreased LOC of unknown origin
- Narcotic agonist for the following: morphine, heroin, Dilaudid, etc.

Contraindications
A
- Use with caution in narcotic-dependent pt’s
- Use with caution in neonates of narcotic-addicted mothers

Adverse reactions
A
- Withdrawal symptoms in the addicted pt
- Tachycardia
- HTN
- Arrhythmias
- N/V
- Diaphoresis

Drug interactions
A
- Incompatible with bisulfite and alkaline solutions

Dosage
A
Adult:
- 0.4 - 2.0 mg IV, IM, SC
- Min recommended dose 0.4 mg
- Repeat at 5 min intervals to max of 10 mg
- Infusion: 2 mg in 500 mL of D5W
- infuse at 0.4 mg/hr (100 mL/h)
Ped:
- 0.1 mg/kg, Max of 0.8 mg, if no response in 10 min give another 0.1 mg/kg

- Duration: 30-60 min

Special considerations
A
- Preg Cat: B
- SZ without causal relationship have been reported
- May not reverse hypotension
- Use caution when administering to narcotic addicts (potential for violent behavior)
