A
- Inhibits electrolyte reabsorption
- Promotes excretion of sodium, potassium, and chloride

- CHF
- Pulmonary edema
- Hypertension crisis

Contraindications
A
- Hypovolemia
- Hypotension (relative contraindication)
- Allergic
- Anuria
- Hepatic coma

Adverse reactions
A
- May exacerbate:
- hypovolemia
- hypokalemia
- hypochloremia
- hyponatremia
- ECG changes
- dry mouth
- hyperglycemia (due to hemoconcentration)

Drug interactions
A
- Lithium toxicity may be potentiated by sodium depletion
- Digitalis toxicity may be potentiated by potassium depletion

Dosage and administration
A

Adult:
- 0.5 - 1.0 mg/kg injected IV over 1-2 minutes
- If no response, double the dose to 2 mg/kg

Pediatric:
- 1 mg/kg/dose IV, IO

- Onset: 5 min
- Peak effects: 20-60 min
- Duration: 4-6 hrs
