PPt.7: Population Ecologoy Unit 1 Flashcards
Groups of actually interbreeding organisms that usually inhabit a specified area
-grow by multiplication
Population
Function of ________ by birth and immigration and ________ due to death and emigration
Additions, losses
5 factors affecting population growth
1) Death rate of the organism under ideal conditions
2) Number of offspring produced by an organism over its lifetime called fecundity
3) Length of organism’s reproductive life span and ability to conceive
4) The frequency with which organisms reproduce
5) Age of first reproduction
Perennials
Iteroparous
Annuals
Semelparous
Oscillate above and below
-Human population grown exponentially for 2,000 years
Stable limit cycle
Type 1:
Low mortality through most of lifespan
Type 2:
Constant mortality throughout lifespan
Type 3:
High initial mortality, followed by period of much lower. relatively constant losses
2 Population Control Factors
1) Density Independent= No greater or lesser effect on an individual
2) Density Dependent= Directly related to population density
A struggle for resources which are needed and have a limited supply
Competition
Rates will increase as prey densities increase because it will be easier to find the prey`
Predation
Greater the population density, the more likely spread of parasites, which must depend on their host
Parasitism and Disease
In a closed environment, microbes may produce toxic metabolic wastes that poison them
Self-poisoning
If the pressure becomes too severe, some members of the population may leave to avoid the consequences of overcrowding and resource depletion
Emigration
