population Flashcards
what is population?
all of the organisms in the same place at the same time that can reproduce together
what are some factors that affect population size?
sunlight/temp, water, soil/nutrients, other living organisms, prey, competition, adaptations, etc.
why do we study population?
We study population to understand the factors that influence the size of the populations. This helps us manage populations like endangered species, pests, and crops.
the total amount of individuals in a population
population size
the number of individuals/area
population density
the pattern in which organisms of a population are spread throughout the range
population distribution
what is the ratio for random sampling?
(# of organisms in sample/area of sample) = total # of organisms/total area
what is the ratio for mark and recapture
total marked/# of total organisms = total of recaptured w/marks/# of recaptured organisms
what is uniform distribution?
individual organisms are spaced out through the area evenly – organisms have social interactions and resources are scarce
what is random distribution?
organisms are spaced out through the area randomly – resources are abundant and there ins’t any strong social interactions
what is clumped distribution?
organisms live together – strong social interactions, competition, territorial
write the ratio and solve:
One night, you trap 40 mice, mark them, and let them go. Two nights later, you again trap 40 mice, and 19 of them are marked.
What is the counting method?
40/x = 19/40
x=84
mark and recapture
