3.2 Flashcards
What is species richness (R)?
Number of species found in a given area
What is the formula for the Shannon-Wiener index (H)?
H = -SUM(Pi*ln[Pi])
What does Pi stand for in the Shannon-Wiener index?
Relative abundance
What does ni stand for in the Shannon Wiener index?
Number of individuals in species i
What does N stand for in the Shannon Wiener index?
Total number of individuals in all species
What does it mean if a community has a Shannon Wiener index of 6?
The community has a lot of diversity
What does it mean if a community has a Shannon Wiener index of 0.2?
Very little diversity, one species is more dominant than others
What is the formula for species evenness (E)?
E = H/ln(R)
What does it mean if a community has an evenness of 1?
There is an equal number of individuals for all species
What does it mean if a community has an evenness of 0.2
Community is not very even, one species is more dominant than other
Why is it good for a community to be diverse?
So it has more stability and can adapt to different environmental situations
If a population is bigger, will it have more or less genetic diversity?
More genetic diversity
What is ecosystem diversity?
Range of habitat types, variation within ecosystem
How does primary succession begin?
begins with virtually lifeless land without soil, then pioneer plants like lichen and bacteria make soil
What are some plants that can be found in the pioneer community stages of primary succession?
grasses, shrubs, lichen, mosses, ferns
