1.3 Flashcards
what is an independent variable?
an independent value is the manipulated/changed variable.
what is a dependent variable?
the dependent variable is the measured variable.
what is a hypothesis?
A hypothesis is a proposed explanation for a phenomenon.
what is the purpose of a control group?
control groups show the difference between normal data and the data after the independent variable is manipulated.
what are the purpose of error bars?
error bars show the amount of variability in the data from the mean. this shows how precise the data is.
what are the consequences of not having a control group?
it will be hard to tell if there was a change from the normal data because you won’t know what the results look like normally.
if the error bar is longer, what does that say about the data?
If the error bar is longer that means the data had a lot of variability and may not be precise.
what does overlap in error bars signify?
overlap signifies there is not much of a difference between the data sets.
what does no overlap in error bars signify?
the two data sets have a notable difference in the data.
what is a good control group for an experiment where plants are given fertilizer to see how well they will grow?
plants growing without fertilizer in the same conditions
