9.2 Flashcards
simple diffusion
high to low concentration, small uncharged molecules can move straight through the membrane
facilitated diffusion
high to low concentration, uses proteins to move larger and/or charged molecules through the membrane
osmosis
diffusion of water to dilute higher solute concentrations to equalize
hypertonic
higher % solute
hypotonic
lower % solute
isotonic
same % solute
active transport
uses energy to move molecules low to high concentration
endocytosis
cell membrane moving to grab molecules outside of the cell and turns into a vesicle to transport the molecules
exocytosis
vesicles releasing molecules out of the cell
phospholipids
molecules that have a hydrophilic head and a hydrophobic tail, clump together to form the cell membrane, cholesterol stabilizes the membrane
parts of cell membrane
phospholipids - hydrophilic head, hydrophobic tail
cholesterol - helps stabilize membrane
protein channels - transports larger and/or charged molecules through membrane
what’s the importance of surface area:volume for cells
the more surface area a cell has, the more space it has to complete cellular processes that happen in the membrane, but the less volume a cell has, the easier it is for things to be carried from one side to the other or to other places inside the cell. this is why bigger animals don’t have big cells.
