What is the safest antibiotic to use in guinea pigs?
Enrofloxacin - Guinea pigs are extremely sensitive to many antibiotics (all the mycins & cillins) and bacitracin.
Which antibiotic is directly toxic and can cause death in guinea pigs?
Streptomycin - never use this drug in this species
What does adrenal disease look like in ferrets?
CS - bilaterally symmetric alopecia, pruritus, vulvar enlargement in females, and prostatitis/cystitis in males. Can see stranguira.
Most common bladder stones in rabbits are composed of what?
Calcium carbonate - rabbits absorb calcium through their GI tract at a rate directly proportional to the amount of calcium in their diet
How does coronavirus present in rats? What does it cause? Transmission? Treatment?
CS - bleeding from the eyes, exophthalmic, squinting, and swollen face and neck, red discharge (stress from the Harderian gland).
Coronavirus in rats causes sialodacryoadentitis which causes inflammation and necrosis of the salivary and lacrimal glands.
Tx - self-limiting and usually resolves within 2 weeks
Transmission - respiratory aerosol
What does hypovitaminosis C look like in a guinea pig? Tx?
AKA scurvy
CS - oral petechiae, loose teeth, rough hair coat, lameness
Tx - vitamin C injections, leafy green veggies
Not multivitamin can have Vit A and D toxicity
