Cardiac Drugs Flashcards
What is the Brand Name, Drug class, MOA, route, and use of Amlodipine? What should you monitor for?
Brand Name: Norvasc
Drug class: Calcium channel blocker/vasodilator
MOA: Inhibits calcium entry into smooth muscle cells
Route: PO
Use: Used to treat hypertension
Monitor: Signs of hypotension and bradycardia
What is the Brand Name, Drug class, MOA, route, and use of Enalapril? What should you monitor for?
Brand Name: Vasotec, E Nacard
Drug class: ACE inhibitor (Angiotensin converting enzyme) inhibitor
MOA: Blocks angiotensin II formation causing vasodilation of glomerular efferent arterioles, decreased intraglomerular pressure and decreased GFR
Route: PO
Use: Used in CHF and hypertension, can also be used in treatment of CRF and PLN
Monitor: Signs of hypotension, monitor blood work for renal function and electrolytes
What is the Brand Name, Drug class, MOA, route, and use of Furosemide? What should you monitor for?
Brand Name: Lasix
Drug Class: Loop Diuretic
MOA: Acts in the thick ascending loop of henle to inhibit reabsorption of NA and CL
Route: PO & IV
Use: CHF to reduce pulmonary edema and CAUTIOUSLY used in oliguria or anuria
Monitor: Fluid, electrolyte changes, and azotemia. Monitor hydration status and BW. Make sure pet has access to fresh water (will urinate more)
What is the Brand Name, Drug class, MOA, route, and use of Lidocaine? What should you monitor for?
Brand name: Xylocaine
Drug class: Anti-arrhythmic (or local anesthetic for non-cardiac use)
MOA: Binds to and inhibits voltage-gated sodium channels
Route: IV, regional infusion
Use: for Vtach and for non cardio related analgesia
Monitor: Use in caution with hepatic disease and has decreased efficacy with hypokalemia
What is the Brand Name, Drug class, MOA, route, and use of Pimobendan? What should you monitor for?
Brand name: Vetmedin
Drug class: Inotropes drug with vasodilator properties
MOA: Calcium sensitizer and selective inhibitor of phosphodiesterase 3 (PDE3)
Route: PO
Use: As adjunctive therapy in CHF cases: CHF 2nd to DCM and CHF 2nd to mitral valve disease
Monitor: Not FDA approved in cats, contraindicated in HCM, and use with caution in arrhythmia cases
What is the Brand Name, Drug class, MOA, route, and use of Spironolactone? What should you monitor for?
Brand Name: Aldactone
Drug class: Aldosterone competitive antagonist
MOA: Competitvely inhibits aldosterone at the level of the distal renal tubules
Route: PO
Use: Diuretic agent used for CHF and certain renal conditions (nephrotic syndrome)
Monitor: This is a weak diuretic, often combined with more potent diuretics. Potassium sparing agent so monitor for hyperkalemia.
