PNS Flashcards
What are peripheral sensory receptors?
structures that pick up sensory stimuli
-initiate signals in sensory axons
How are sensory receptors classified?
location
type of stimulus detected
Exteroceptors
sensitive to stimuli arising from outside the body
- located near body surface
- touch, pain, pressures, temp, special sense organs
Interceptors (visceroceptors)
receive stimuli from internal viscera
- temp, taste, stretching of tissue
- visceral pain, nausea, hunger, fullness
Proprioceptors
monitor degree of stretch
-located in musculoskeletal organs
Mechanoreceptors
respond to mechanical forces
-touch, pressure, stretch, vibrations
Thermoreceptors
temp changes
Chemoreceptors
chemicals in solutions
Photoreceptors
respond to light
Nociceptors
respond to harmful stimuli that result in pain and damage to tissue
How many pairs of spinal nerves are there?
31
Spinal cords arise as a series of _______
small rootlets
Dorsal root? Ventral root?
DR- sensory nerve fibres
VR- motor nerve fibres
Dorsal/ ventral ramus
contain motor and sensory nerve fibres
