16
Q

diagnosis of an empyema

A
  • CXR (D sign)
  • bloods
  • aspirate pleural fluid (pH, glucose, gram stain)
17
Q

management of an empyema

A
  • co-amoxiclav (avoid ahminoglycosides e.g. gentamicin as they have poor pleural penetration)
  • if septic then chest drain (VTE prophylaxis)
  • nutrition
18
Q

what is a lung abscess

A

pus in the lung parenchyma (often caused by aspiration)
