Pleura Flashcards
What are the 2 types of pleura that surrounds the thoracic cavity?
Parietal Pleura and Visceral Pleura
What is the serous membrane surrounding both of the lungs?
Pleural sacs
Lines the lateral surface of the mediastinum(location of the pericardium and heart).
Mediastinal parietal pleura
Lines the internal surface of the ribs.
Costal parietal pleura
Lines the superior surface of the diaphragm.
Diaphragmatic parietal pleura
Extends above rib 1 to the root of the neck.
Cervical parietal pleura
Is the parietal pleura innervated by sensory neurons or motor neurons?
Sensory Neurons
What sensory nerves innervate the diaphragm?
Intercostal nerves and Phrenic nerves
What do the intercostal nerves innervate?
The parietal pleura lining the peripheral portion of the diaphragm and the ribs.
What does the phrenic nerves innervate?
Innervate the parietal pleura lining the central portion of diaphragm and the mediastinum.
What is the function of the visceral pleura?
Produces and reabsorbs most of the pleural fluid in the pleural space which is drained by lymphatics.
What is the visceral pleura innervated by?
Vagus nerve (CN-X).
What is the pleural space?
The space between the parietal and visceral pleurae.
What is in the pleural space that allows the parietal and visceral pleurae to be adhered to each other?
Pleural fluid
What is a pneumothorax?
The coupling between the parietal and visceral pleurae may be broken. The air from the puncture cause equalization between pleural pressure and atmospheric pressure, resulting in a collapsed lung.
