Overview of the heart Flashcards
What are the three layers of the heart?
Epicardium, Myocardium, and the Endocardium.
The outer layer of the heart consisting of loose connective tissue, adipose tissue and visceral pericardium.
Epicardium
The middle layer, consisting of cardiac muscle responsible for contraction of the heart.
Myocardium
The inner layer, consisting of endothelial cells that line the lumen of the four chambers.
Endocardium
Receives deoxygenated blood from the systemic and coronary circulations.
Right atrium
Receives oxygenated blood from the pulmonary circulation.
Left atrium
Pumps blood to the lungs.
Right ventricle
Pumps blood to the remainder of the body, including the myocardium.
Left ventricle
What side of the heart is the pulmonary circuit?
Right side
What side of the heart is the systemic circuit?
Left side
What mediastinum is the heart located in?
Middle mediastinum
A narrow groove in the heart located along the boundary between the atria and ventricles.
Atrioventricular (AV) groove (Coronary sulcus).
Located on the anterior surface of the heart between the left and right ventricles; extends from the coronary sulcus to the apex and contains the left anterior descending artery and the great cardiac vein.
Anterior interventricular sulcus.
Located on the diaphragmatic surface of the heart between the left and right ventricles; it extends from the coronary sulcus to the apex and contains the posterior descending artery and the middle cardiac vein.
Posterior interventricular sulcus.
