This is the smallest mediastinum, it is deep to the sternum and bounded by the sternal angle, pericardial sac, and diaphragm.
Anterior mediastinum.
What is contained within the anterior mediastinum? (2 items)
Adipose tissue and Thymus.
This is the mediastinum that only contains the pericardial sac and heart.
Middle Mediastinum.
This mediastinum is posterior to the pericardial sac.
Posterior Mediastinum.
What structure are contained in the posterior mediastinum?
Descending thoracic aorta, azygos system of veins, thoracic duct, esophagus, and sympathetic nerves.
This mediastinum is the region above the sternal angle.
Superior mediastinum.
What structures are contained in the anterior mediastinum?
Aortic arch (Brachiocephalic trunk, Left common carotid artery, and Left subclavian artery), SVC (Left and Right Brachiocephalic veins), Trachea, Esophagus, Phrenic Nerves, Vagus Nerves, and Thymus.
