Muscles of Anterior Compartment of the Forearm Flashcards
What are the two compartments of the forearm?
Anterior and Posterior.
What is the common attachment of the anterior compartment of the forearm?
Medial epicondyle of the humerus.
What is the common action of the anterior compartment of the forearm?
Flexion.
What is the common innervation of the anterior compartment of the forearm?
Median nerve.
What are the 3 muscles groups of the forearm and how many are in each group?
Superficial (4)
Intermediate (1)
Deep (3)
What are the origins of the pronator teres (PT)?
Two heads; medial epicondyle and the medial supracondylar ridge of the humerus.
What is the insertion of the pronator teres?
Midshaft of the radius.
What is the action of pronator teres?
Pronates forearm.
What innervates pronator teres?
Median nerve (C6-C7)
What is the origin of flexor carpi radialis (FCR)?
Medial epicondyle of the humerus.
What is the insertion of flexor carpi radialis?
Base of 2nd and 3rd metacarpals.
What are the actions of flexor carpi radialis?
Wrist flexion and radial deviation (abduction).
What innervates flexor carpi radialis?
Median nerve (C6-C7).
This muscle can be absent on one or both sides in an individual?
Palmaris longus.
What is the origin of palmaris longus (PL)?
Medial epicondyle of the humerus.
What is the insertion of palmaris longus?
Palmar aponeurosis.
What is the action of palmaris longus?
Weak wrist flexion.
What innervates palmaris longus?
Median nerve (C6-C7).
What are the origins of flexor carpi ulnaris (FCU)?
Two heads; Medial epicondyle and olecranon process.
What are the insertions of the flexor carpi ulnaris?
Pisiform bone and base of 5th metacarpal.
What are the actions of flexor carpi ulnaris?
Wrist flexion and ulnar deviation (adduction).
What innervates flexor carpi ulnaris?
Ulnar nerve (C7-T1).
Arises from two heads and gives rise to 4 tendons, which transverse the carpal tunnel to insert on digits 2 to 5.
Flexor digitorum superficialis (FDS).
What are the origins of flexor digitorum superficialis (FDS)?
Two heads; Medial epicondyle and radius.
What is the insertion of flexor digitorum superficialis?
Onto the middle phalanges of digits 2 to 5.
What are the actions of flexor digitorum superficialis?
Wrist, Metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint, and Proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint flexion.
What innervates flexor digitorum superficialis?
Median nerve (C6-C7).
What muscle is located deep to the flexor digitorum superficialis muscle?
Flexor pollicis longus (FPL).
What are the origins of flexor pollicis longus?
Radius and interosseous membrane.
What is the insertion of flexor pollicis longus?
Onto distal phalanx of digit 1.
What are the actions of flexor pollicis longus?
Thumb flexion.
What innervates flexor pollicis longus?
Median nerve (C6-C7).
What are the origins of flexor digitorum profundus (FDP)?
Medial surface of ulna and interosseous membrane.
What is the insertion of flexor digitorum profundus?
Onto distal phalanges of digits 2 to 5.
What are the actions of flexor digitorum profundus?
Wrist, MCP, PIP, and distal interphalangeal (DIP) joint flexion.
What innervates flexor digitorum profundus?
Dual innervation; radial belly (digits 2-3) innervated by median nerve (anterior interosseous nerve), and ulnar belly (digits 4-5) innervated by the ulnar nerve.
What is the origin of pronator quadratus (PQ)?
Distal anterior surface of ulna.
What is the insertion of pronator quadratus?
Distal anterior surface of radius.
What is the action of pronator quadratus?
Pronates forearm.
What innervates pronator quadratus?
