Plasma Membrane Flashcards
1
Q
What are the molecules within the membrane?
A
- Integral proteins
- Integral proteins 2
- Glycoproteins
- Glycolipids
- Peripheral proteins
- Cholesterol
2
Q
What are the functions of integral proteins?
A
- Acts as carriers and channels of molecules, that cannot diffuse through the membrane e.g. amino acids, sugars and ions
3
Q
What are the functions of integral proteins 2?
A
- Can be receptors for hormones or enzymes that catalyse reactions within the cell
4
Q
What are the functions of glycoproteins?
A
- Play a role in cell division (sticking together) and as a receptor that sends/receives chemical signals
5
Q
What are the functions of glycolipids?
A
- Allow for cell recognition during the immune response and enable cell adhesion to create tissues
6
Q
What is the function of peripheral proteins
A
- Free proteins on cell membrane surface or bound to an intrinsic protein. Function as an enzyme to catalyse reactions
7
Q
What is the function of cholesterol?
A
- Controls membrane fluidity and keeps cells stable at body temperature (prevents bursting) more cholesterol=less fluidity
