Mammalian Reproduction System🐾 Flashcards
What are the three layers that consists within the uterus?
- Perimetrium
- Myometrium
- Endometrium
What consists within the male reproductive system?
- Testes (where sperm is produced)
- Epididymis (where sperm mature and stored)
- Vas Deferens (tubes that carry sperm away from testes)
- Urethra (tubes that carry sperm/urine/semen out of body)
- Penis (semen and urine can pass through)
- Prostate gland (secretes fructose and enzymes to sperm which forms semen)
- Bulbus glandis (Erectile tissue)
What consists within the female reproductive system?
- Cervix- (protecting the tract from infection)
- Vagina- (produces acidic mucus to kill bacteria to fight infection)
- Oviducts- (where fertilisation occurs)
- Ovaries- (produces ova/oestrogen/progesterone)
- Vulva- (swells during oestrous)
- Uterus- (stretching to fit growing foetus)
- Uterine horn- (can allow for the development of several offspring at once)
What are the functions of female reproductive tract?
- Lactation- produce milk
- Birth- Expulsion of foetus
- Nourishment- housing and nourishment for fertilisation and embryo
- Ova- production of ova
What is Placenta?
- Temporary organ attached to uterus, develops with foetus
- Occurs when pregnancy is established
- Provide connection between foetus and maternal tissue to provide nutrition, respiration, protection and excretion
- Contains both foetal (from umbilical cord (from uterine wall) blood vessels
What is the uterus like in certain types of mammals?
- Duplex (Rabbit)
• two uterine horns
• two cervices
• one vagina - Bicornuate (pig, cat and dog)
• two long uterine horns
• common uterine body
• one cervix - Bipartite (cow)
• small uterine horn
What is the function of the testes? - Male
- Where sperm is produced
What is the function of the Epididymis? -Male
- Where sperm is matured and stored
What is the function of the Vas Deferens?- Male
- Tubes that carry sperm away from the testes
What is the function of the urethra? -Male
- Tubes that carry sperm, urine and semen out of the body
What is the function of the penis? -Male
- Located on the outside of the body, semen and urine can pass through; containing three columns of erectile tissue
What is the function of the prostate gland?- Male
- Adds secretions (fructose and enzymes) to the sperm to form semen
What is the function of the bulbus glandis? -Male
- Erectile tissue that swells up during copulation to lock the male to the female
What happens during Copus Cavernosum
- Penis fills with blood
What happens during Copus spongiosum?
- Prevents the collapse of the urethra during erection
What is the function of the cervix? -Female
- A muscular barrier sealing the uterus; maintaining a sterile environment and protecting the tract from infection
What is the function of the vagina? -Female
- Shaped to fit the penis during mating and produces acidic mucus to kill bacteria and prevent infection
What is the function of oviducts? -Female
- Known as a Fallopian tube; where fertilisation occurs
What is the function of ovaries? -Female
- Where ova are produced as well as oestrogen and progesterone
What is the function of the vulva? -Female
- External part of the tract; can swell during oestrous to show receptivity to the male (ready to mate)
What is the function of the uterus? -Female
- Thick muscular structure where the ovum implants; stretches to fit the growing foetus and contracts to expel at parturition
What is the function of the Uterine Horn? -Female
- In some species, makes up part of the uterus and can allow for the development of several offspring at once
What are the three layers of the uterus?
- Perimetrium- (supports shape)
- Myometrium- (muscular layer which contracts)
- Endometrium- (Forms inner layer, where implantation occurs)
What is the uterus like in a rabbit?
- Duplex:
• Two uterine horns
• Two cervices
• One vagina
What is the uterus like in a Pig, Cat and Dog?
- Bicornuate
• Two long uterine horns
• Common uterine body
• One cervix
What is the uterus like in a cow?
- Bipartite
• Smaller uterine horn
A Duplex uterus belongs to which animal?
- Rabbit
A Bicornuate uterus belongs to which animal?
- Dog
- Cat
- Pig
A Bipartite uterus belongs to which animal?
- Cow
What is the os penis made of
- Bone
What is the os penis also known as?
- Bacculum
What is the function of the os penis
- Maintain erection during copulation in dogs and cats
What is the order of the stages in reproduction
- Copulation
- Fertilisation
- Implantation
- Gestation
- Parturition
What are the following species length of centric implantation:
1.Rabbit
2.Cat
3.Dog
4. Pig
5. Cattle
- Rabbit- 6.5 days
- Cats- 10-12 days
- Dog- 6-10 days
- Pig- 12-14 days
- Cattle- 30 days
What is centric implantation?
- The length of time between fertilisation and implantation
What is the gestation length of these species
1. Cat
2. Cow
3. Dog
4. Pig
5. Rabbit
- Cat- 61-72 days
- Cow- 279-287 days
- Dog- 58-70 days
- Pig- 114-115 days
- Rabbit- 30-32 days
What is first milk called?
- Colostrum
What is the function of the cervix?
- Provides protection for the reproductive system against infection
What is the function of the uterus?
- Where the fertilised egg implants, stretches to accommodate growth of the foetus, contracts to expel the foetus
What type of uterus does a pig have?
- Bicornuate
What are two functions of the female reproductive tract?
- Produce eggs
- Protects the developing foetus until birth
Describe the three layers of the uterus
- Perimetrium- outer layer- supports the shape of the uterus
- Endometrium- forms the inner lining and where implantation takes place
- Myometrium- muscle layer- contracts
Define fertilisation
- DNA from two gametes combines sperm and egg fuse
Define implantation
- A fertilised egg attaches itself to the lining of the uterus
Define gestation
- The length of time between conception and birth
