A large farm employing twenty or more slaves which produced a staple crop for both domestic and foreign markets

Percentage of tobacco planters who were classed as large plantations

Post civil war era demise of the cotton plantation
Did not lead to demise of cotton production
Farmers who used slaves could
Increased their product output
Thus increasing their income
Could by more slaves
Enslaved people grew most
Of the cotton in the South
Slaves directly affected the labour system
Meant smaller farmers did not make significant profit because they yielded less
3/4 of southerners
Did not hold slaves
However still supported the south in the civil war
1790-1860
Wealthy people moved to the new south-west to create plantations
Indians removed from Georgia and Mississippi so white elite could grow cotton on the rich and fertile soil
Waterways helped
Cotton more around the country
“Blackbelt” of Alabama and Mississippi
Referred to the population tending to be a majority of slaves
