Plant transport systems and transpiration Flashcards
What is xylem and what does it carry?
Xylem is the vascular tissue in plants which conducts water and dissolved nutrients upwards from the root
What is phloem and what does it carry?
Phloem is the vascular tissue in plants which conducts ions and food downwards from the leaves.
What is transpiration?
Transpiration is the process of water movement through a plant and its evaporation from aerial parts, such as leaves, stems and flowers.
What factors affect the rate of transpiration?
Light, temperature, water and humidity.
How does light affect the rate of transpiration?
As light intensity increases, so does the amount of transpiration. This is as more light means more photosynthesis, which means more water brought up into the cells.
How does temperature affect transpiration?
As temperature increases so does the amount of transpiration. This due to the rate of reaction being faster
How does wind affect transpiration?
A faster wind means that more transpiration happens. This is as the ind brushes against the leaf, moving things out of the way, so more air can be diffused into the plant.
How does humidity affect the amount of transpiration?
A higher humidity leads to less transpiration. This is as water would struggle to leave the leaf by diffusion if the concentration of water is high outside.
