Plant Structure Flashcards
What are the plant organs?
Leaf
Stem
Roots
What are the tissues in a leaf?
- Xylem
- Phloem
- Mesophyll
- Epidermal
What does the mesophyll tissue do?
Most of photosynthesis happens here
What is the function of the xylem and phloem?
Transport water, mineral ions and sucrose around the plant
What is the function of the epidermal tissue?
Covers the whole plant
Why does a leaf have a large surface area?
To absorb more light
Why is a leaf thin?
Short distance for CO2 to diffuse into leaf cell
What do leaves have chlorophyll?
Absorbs sunlight for photosynthesis
Why does a leaf have stomata?
Allows CO2 to diffuse into the leaf
What are the part of the of internal leaf?
- Waxy cuticle
- Upper epidermis
- Palisade mesophyll
- Spongy mesophyll
- Lower epidermis (guard cells with chloroplasts)
- Waxy cuticle
Why is the epidermis thin and transparent?
To allow more light to reach the palisade cells
Why is the palisade layer at the top of the leaf?
To absorb more light
Why is there a spongy layer in a leaf?
Air spaces allow CO2 to diffuse through the leaf
