Glucose and Plants Flashcards
1
Q
What do plants use glucose for?
A
- Respiration
- Making cell walls
- Making proteins
- Stored in seeds
- Stored as starch
2
Q
How is glucose used for respiration?
A
- Glucose made in leaves
- Use some for respiration
- This releases energy which enables them to convert the rest of glucose in other useful substances
3
Q
How is glucose used to make cell walls?
A
Glucose converted into cellulose for making strong cell walls
4
Q
How is glucose used for making proteins?
A
Glucose combined with nitrate ions to make amino acids which are then made into proteins
5
Q
How is glucose stored in seeds?
A
Glucose turned into lipids for storing in seeds
6
Q
How is glucose stored as starch?
A
Glucose is turned into starch and stored in roots stems and leaves ready for use when photosynthesis isn’t happening
Starch is insoluble so it’s better for storing than glucose
