Mitosis Flashcards
1
Q
What does mitosis do?
A
Makes me cells for growth and repair
2
Q
How many pairs of chromosomes does each cell have?
A
23 pairs
3
Q
Who do we have our chromosomes copies from?
A
1 from mother and 1 from father and they form two copies of a specific chromosome
4
Q
What needs to be done when a body cell divides?
A
Needs to make new cells identical to original cell with the same number of chromosomes
5
Q
What is mitosis?
A
When a cell reproduces itself by splitting to form two identical offspring
6
Q
Describe the process of mitosis?
A
- In cell that’s not dividing, DNA is spread out in long strings
- If cell gets signal to divide, it needs to duplicate its DNA, so DNA is copied and forms x-shaped chromosomes
- Chromosomes line up at centre of cell and cell fibres pull them apart, two arms of each chromosome go to opposite ends
- Membranes form around each set and these become nuclei of two new cells
- Cytoplasm divides
- Two new cells containing the exact same DNA have been formed
7
Q
What uses mitosis?
A
Asexual reproduction
