Distribution of Organisms Flashcards
1
Q
What is a habitat ?
A
Place where an organism lives
2
Q
What is the distribution of organisms?
A
Where an organism is found
3
Q
Which environmental factors affect where an organism is found?
A
- Temperature
- Availability of water
- Availability of oxygen and carbon dioxide
- Availability of light
- Availability of nutrients
4
Q
How can you study the distribution of organisms?
A
- Measure how common an organism is in two sample area using quadrats
- How distribution changes across an area using quadrats and transects
5
Q
How do you use quadrats?
A
- Place a 1m squared quadrat randomnly in the first sample area
- Count all organisms in the quadrat
- Repeat step 1 and 2 as many time as you want
- Work out the mean number of organisms
- Then repeat steps in a different location and then compare both data
6
Q
How do you work out the total population?
A
Work out the mean number of organisms per metre squared then multiply by the total area of land/habitat
7
Q
How do you use transects?
A
- Mark out line using a tape measure
- Then place quadrants at regular intervals and count the organisms in the areas
- And record the results
