Q

Explain the enzyme reaction

A
  • The enzyme has a specific shape that fits a substrate with the same unique shape,
  • Where the substrate sits on the enzyme is called the active site
  • The substrate and enzyme join and produce an enzyme-substrate complex
  • Then the enzyme splits the substrate and makes the product

Q

Why do enzymes need the right temperature?

A

Changing the temperature changed the rate of the enzyme-catalysed reaction
If it gets too hot the enzyme denatures and bond break
Enzymes usually work the at the optimum temperature of 37 degrees

Q

Why do enzymes need the right pH?

A

If pH is too low or high it interferes with the bonds holding the enzymes together this changes the shape and denatures the enzyme
Usually the optimum pH is neutral so 7, but in some like pepsin it is pH 2
