Exercise Flashcards
What do muscle cells do?
Use oxygen to release energy from glucose which is used to contract muscles
What happens when you exercise?
Heart rate increases
Breathing rate increases and breathing deepens
Sweating
What is used during exercise?
Glycogen
What’s glycogen made from?
Glucose from food is stored as glycogen
Where is glycogen stored?
Mainly in the liver but each muscle has its own store
What happens during vigorous exercise?
Muscles us glucose rapidly so some of the glycogen is converted back to glucose
What is the word equation for anaerobic respiration?
Glucose=Energy+Lactic Acid
What is anaerobic respiration?
When their is not enough oxygen supply is when repairing
What does lactic acid cause?
Painful muscles and muscle fatigue
What is a downside of anaerobic respiration?
Does not release nearly as much energy as aerobic respiration
What is an oxygen debt?
When there is not enough oxygen being supplied into the body
How do you ‘repay’ an oxygen debt?
Keep breathing hard to get more oxygen into the blood, so it removes lactic acid by oxidising it to harmless CO2 and water
