What is the first stage?
Sensorimotor (0-2 years)
What occurs during the sensorimotor stage?
Coordination of senses with motor response, sensory curiosity about the world;
Language used for demands and cataloguing;
Object permanence developed
What is the second stage?
Preoperational (2-7 years)
What occurs during the preoperational stage?
Symbolic thinking, use of proper syntax, and grammar to express concepts;
Imagination and intuition are strong. but complex abstract thought still difficult;
Conversation developed
What is the third stage?
Concrete operation (7-11 years)
What occurs during the concrete operational stage?
Concepts attached to concrete situations;
Time, space, and quantity are understood and can be applied, but not as independent concepts
What is the fourth stage?
Formal operations (11+ years)
What occurs during the formal operations stage?
Theoretical, hypothetical, and counterfactural thinking;
Abstract logic and reasoning;
Strategy and planning become possible;
Concepts learned in one context can be applied to another
