Brain and Its Functions Flashcards
What are the three basic units of the brain?
Forebrain, midbrain, and hindbrain;
Cerebrum, cerebellum, and brainstem
What does the hindbrain consist of?
The upper part of the spinal cord, the brain stem, and cerebellum
What does the hindbrain control?
The body’s vital functions such as respiration and heart rate
What does the cerebellum do?
Coordinates movement and is involved in learning rote movements;
Controls coordination and balance
What does the midbrain do?
Controls some reflex actions and is part of the circuit involved in the control of eye movements and other voluntary movements
What does the forebrain consist of?
Consists primarily of the cerebrum and the structures hidden beneath it
What does the cerebrum do?
Involved in remembering, problem solving, thinking, and feeling; also controls movement;
Performs higher functions like interpreting touch, vision and hearing, as well as speech, reasoning, emotions, learning, and fine control of movement
What does the brainstem do?
Connects the brain to the spinal cord and controls automatic functions such as breathing, digestion, heart rate and blood pressure
What else is the brainstem called?
Medulla oblongata
What does the forebrain do?
Is home to sensory processing, endocrine structures, and higher reasoning;
Processes sensory information, helps with reasoning and problem-solving, and regulates autonomic, endocrine, and motor functions
What does the midbrain do? (2)
Plays a role in motor movement and audio/visual processing;
Helps to regulate movement and process auditory and visual information
What does the hindbrain do? (2)
Is involved with autonomic functions such as respiratory rhythms and sleep;
Helps to regulate autonomic functions, relay sensory information, coordinate movement, and maintain balance and equilibrium
