Chapter 2: Developmental Research Designs Flashcards
What is the longitudinal design?
Researchers study individuals at several points during the life span
What are the pros to using a longitudinal design?
They can generate in-depth and potentially interesting results
What are the cons to using a longitudinal design?
Expensive;
Researchers no longer interested in topic;
Unforeseen circumstances
What is a cross-sectional design?
Researchers compare several groups to one another based on variables like age, socioeconomic class, and gender
What are cohort effects?
The influences of being part of a group bonded on the basis of a time period or certain life experiences
What is an IRB?
Institutional Review Board;
Ensures the safety of those participating in research studies
What is informed consent?
Humans participating in research studies must be participating by their own free choice;
Before a study begins, participants must be told all the details of the study
What is coercion?
Force
Is deception acceptable?
Yes, but only if it’s necessary for the efficacy of the study
What is deception?
Involved misleading participants about the nature of an experiment and its methodology
What is confidentiality?
The identities of participants in a study must be kept confidential;
Protects their private information
What is the committee for animal research ethicality?
Animal Care and Use Committee (ACUC)
What is CARE?
APA’s Committee on Animal Research and Ethics
What is hindsight bias?
Claiming to have known the result all along
