Surgical Emergency Medical Response

17
Q

Purpose of the Surgical Emergency Response Team (SERT).

A

Resource called upon when a PT requires life or limb saving procedures beyond the capabilities of on-scene EMS personnel or when the PT cannot be extricated and TRx in a reasonable amount of time.

18
Q

Guiding principle of ‘life before limb’ as it relates to the SERT.

A

Life-saving measure, prioritizing life-saving procedures over time-saving measures, particularly in situations requiring amputation due to the inability to extricate a PT.

19
Q

How is SERT activated?

ICr, in consultation with the Tx/rescue sector on scene, is responsible for activating the SERT by calling Dispatch requesting mobilization of the surgical team.

20
Q

Role of the Tactical Radio Operator (TRO) in the activation of SERT?

A

Contacts the assigned trauma center via the predetermined facility activation process and asks for the team to prepare to be TRx to the scene, and then sends the closest available BC to pick up the team and TRx them to the scene of the incident.

21
Q

Role of the SERT physician upon arrival at the scene of a surgical emergency medical response.

A

Establishing medical direction, assuming control of PT care, and working under the IC to provide PT Tx, extrication, and TRx.

22
Q

Responsibilities of personnel during a surgical emergency medical response?

A

Assist the SERT w/ procedures and interventions within their standard EMS protocol, and work together with SERT members to provide life and limb-saving procedures.

23
Q
