Photosynthesis Flashcards
What is photosynthesis
The process which leaves absorb light and carbon dioxide to produce glucose
How does photosynthesis happen
Plants take in water from their roots and carbon dioxide from the environment. They also take in light energy which reacts witch chlorophyll in their leaves to turn into glucose.
What is the photosynthesis equation
6co2 + 6h2o -> photosynthesis -> c6h12o6
What do plants store starch as
Glucose
How does carbon dioxide affect the rate of photosynthesis
The greater the concentration of co2 the greater the rate of photosynthesis
How does temperature affect photosynthesis
After the optimum temp, the rate of photosynthesis decreases.
What is an experiment to show oxygen production in photosynthesis
- Fill two large containers 3/4 full of room temp water and add 3 tbsp of baking soda. Stir until dissolved
- Place elodea sprigs in the bottom of the containers with a funnel inverted over them. Make sure there is enough water so the funnel is fully submerged.
- Fill a test tube with water so there is no air trapped inside.
- Invert the test tubes and place over the stem of each funnel. If there are air bubbles, gently tilt the tube until they escape.
- Leave one jar in direct light and one jar in darkness. The jar in darkness is the control.
- Leave both jars for 24 hours.
The jar which was in the light should have an air bubble at the top of the test tube. There should be no bubbles in the jar which was in the darkness.
What is a starch production test
- Cover part of a destarched leaf with black paper and leave in sunlight for 2 hours.
- After 2 hours test both areas of the leaf with iodine solution.
What is a photosynthesis test for carbon dioxide
- Enclose a destarched plant in a plastic bag with soda lime to absorb carbon dioxide.
- Leave the plant for two hours and then test the plant for starch.
