Movemment In And Out Of Cells Flashcards
What is diffusion
Something going from a concentrated are to a less consentrated area
How does concentration affect the rate of diffusion
The higher the concentration, the faster the rate of diffusion.
Low concentration = less collisions
High concentration = more collisions.
How does diffusion happen
Molecules like oxygen and co2 more through a partially permeable membrane.
What is osmosis
Water molecules passing through. Some water molecules become attached to molecules due to polar bond meaning they are too big to pass through
What is active transport
Going from a low concentration to a high concentration
Proteins in the cell membrane act as protein carriers. They pick up molecules that the cells need and transfer them through the membrane to the cell.
What are turgid cells
When a cell has reached its capacity for water retention
How does surface areas affect movement in and out of cells
Flat longer cells have faster rate of transport
How does temp affect rate of transport
Higher temp = faster rate
How does concentration affect transport
The greater the concentration, the faster the transfer
What is an experiment to show osmosis
- Slice carrots into to equal batches
- Put one batch in ordinary water and the other batch in water with salt dissolved at a ratio of 1tbsp/100ml
- Leave for 30 mins
- Remove carrots, dry and weigh them.
- You should find that the carrots in the pure water should have increased in weight due to water passing into the carrots through osmosis
- The carrots in the salt water should have decreased in weight due to osmosis from the carrot cells into the higher consented salt water.
What is a diffusion experiment
Put a drop of ink into a glass of water. After some time the ink will spread throughout the water
