DNA, GENES, CHROMOSOMES. Flashcards
What are genes?
The source of all the information needed to create an organism
What is DNA?
A chemical which holds the genetic code which is responsible for all the characteristics of a species.
What are chromosomes?
String like structures inside the nucleus of a cell. They come in pairs and contain thousands of genes.
What is a dominant gene?
When the gene has dominance over another.
What is a recessive gene?
A gene that does exert its characteristics when a dominant gene is present.
What is a homozygous?
When two alleles are identical.
What is a heterozygous?
When two alleles are different.
What is a genotype?
The genetic makeup of an organism.
What is a phenotype?
The organisms observed properties.
What is Co dominance?
Occurs when the physical manifestations of both alleles are fission,e in the organisms phenotype.
What are alleles?
Different versions of the same gene.
