It travels down the oviducts by cilia
What happens is the ovum is NOT fertilised
The uterus lining isn’t needed and it is broken down, releasing the blood.
What is cilia
Hairlike Cells that help the ovum move through the oviducts
What hormones is the menstrual cycle controlled by
FSH, Oestrogen, LH, progesterone.
What does FSH do
Causes follicles in the ovary to develop. Secretes oestrogen.
Where does FSH come from
The pituitary glands
What does oestrogen do
Helps develop the lining of the uterus
What does LH ado
Helps the follicle develop into corpus lutem
Where does LH come from
The pituitary gland
What does corpus lutem do
Produces progesterone
What does progesterone do
Increases the thickness of the lining of the uterus and causes it to be supplied with blood vessels.
What happens to corpus lutem if the woman does not become pregnant
It breaks down and stops the production of progesterone and causes the next period.
What is the placenta for

Allows waste from the baby to be removed via the mother
Secretes progesterone
