Genetic Diagrams Flashcards
What do genetic diagrams show
How offspring inherit characteristic such as eye and hair colour
What do the genes you inherit control?
Which characteristics you develop
How many genes are the characteristics controlled by?
Some are controlled by a single gene, most are controlled by several genes interacting.
How many of each gene do you have?
Two of the same, one from each parent.
What happens if the alleles are different?
You have instructions for two different versions of a certain characteristic.
How many versions of a certain characteristic can you show?
One.
What causes the version of the characteristic you show?
The dominant allele.
How can a characteristic caused by a recessive allele be shown?
If both alleles are recessive.
What is a genotype
The characteristics you have.
What is a phenotype.
The characteristics your alleles produce, which you show.
Which letters are used to represent a dominant allele.
Capital letters
Which letters are used to represent a recessive allele.
Lower case.
What combination of letters would you show if you are homozygous for a trait
Two lowercase or two capital
What letters would you use if you are heterozygous for a trait?
One capital and one lower.
What happens if a characteristic is caused by co dominant alleles.
Neither alleles are dominant or recessive so you will show characteristics from both alleles. E.g blood group AB
What is the inheritance of a single characteristic called
Monohybrid.
What happens if you breed two heterozygous parents
There is 75% chance of the offspring developing one parents traits and 25% chance of the offspring developing the other parents traits.
What happens if you breed two homozygous parents
There is only one possible result. Breeding BB or bb parents will only give offspring with Bb genotype.
