Photosynthesis Flashcards
Photosynthesis
Process by which light energy is used to make glucose, carried out by all organisms in Plant Kingdom
It is a reduction reaction; carbon in CO2 is gaining electrons
Grana
In chloroplast
Made up of membranes called thylakoids
Where light-dependent reactions occur
Stroma
In chloroplast
Where Calvin cycle & light-independent reactions occur
Photosynthetic pigments
Chemicals that absorb light energy & use it to carry out photosynthesis
Pigments
Substances that absorb light in the visible spectrum
Different pigments absorb different wavelengths
Chlorophyll a
It’s green & is the only photosynthetic pigment that can participate directly in light-dependent reactions
Antennae or Accessory Pigments
Assist in photosynthesis by capturing & passing on photons of light to chlorophyll a & thus expand the range of light that can be used to produce sugar
Chlorophyll b
Green & absorb all other wavelengths besides green
Carotenoids
Yellow, orange, & red
Responsible for colour of carrots
Phycobilins
Red & are found in red algae that live in deep ocean where there is little light
Light-Dependent Reactions
Part of photosynthesis that requires light
Produces energy (ATP) & protons for the light-independent reactions
Release oxygen
Light-Independent Reactions
Part of photosynthesis that doesn’t require light directly, only products of light-dependent reactions
It’s function is to make sugar (PGAL)
Carbon Fixation
Incorporation of CO2 into a sugar, occurs during Calvin Cycle
Calvin Cycle
Cyclical process that produce sugar (PGAL) in light-independent reactions
Reduction
Gain of electrons
