phases of motor learning Flashcards
1
Q
what are the 3 progressive leanring stages?
A
- The Cognitive Phase
- The Associative Stage
- The Autonomous Stage
2
Q
what is the first stage of learning and what does it consist of?
A
cognitive phase
- Athlete has little capacity to detect or correct their own errors
- Extrinsic augmented feedback
- Simplistic and frequent feedback required
- Little, if no cue recognition
- Very inconsistent from one attempt to the next
- Large size and frequency of errors
- Novice performer
3
Q
what is the second stage of learning and what does it consist of?
A
Associative Phase
- Athlete begins to detect and correct their own errors
- Combination of extrinsic augmented and intrinsic feedback
- More specific feedback required
- Some relevant cue recognition
- Consistency improves
- Moderate size and frequency of errors
- Intermediate performer
4
Q
what is the third stage of learning and what does it consist of?
A
Autonomous Phase
- can detect their own errors and make adjustments
- Mainly Intrinsic feedback as athletes can self-correct
- Very specific feedback when provided by extrinsic source
- Attends only to relevant cues with improved decision making
- very consistent performance
- Very low size and frequency of errors
- Expert performer
