feedback Flashcards
what is feedback?
- information a performer receives about their performance of a skill.
- It can be given prior to, during, or after performance.
what is the purpose of feedback?
- Motivate performer
- To reinforce learning and provide information
how does feedback motivate the performer?
- motivates the performer to continue to strive for improvement
- re-assure the performer that progress is happening
what impact does motivational feeback have on performers?
- They are more interested and involved in training
Persist longer in learning a skill - Apply greater effort to learn a skill
how does feedback reinforce learning and provide information?
increases the chances of the behavior being repeated.
what are the four types of feedack?
- Intrinsic
- Extrinsic
- Concurrent
- Terminal
what is intrinsic feedback?
- received from sensory receptors inside muscles, joints, and tendons
- provide information to the performer about their execution of the skill.
- feedback allows a player to know how well the ball was hit as soon as contact between ball and stick is made
what is extrinsic feedback?
- is information received from outside the body.
- received by the sensory system and is seen, felt or heard and is delivered by a coach or instructor
- Provides additional information to the performer
what are the two types of extrinsic feedback?
knowledge of performance
- Subjective feedback that a performer receives regarding the quality of their movement or technique
- Analysis of technique and execution of the performance
knowledge of results
- Objective feedback provides the performer with information regarding the success of their performance in achieving the desired outcome
- Analysis of the result or outcome of the movement
what is concurrent feedback?
- Provided during the performance via the coach.
- player can use this information to immediately change performance if need
what is terminal extrinsic feedback?
- Provided by an external source after the movement has been completed
- can only use this feedback to change future performance.
how often should feedback be provided?
cognitive = frequently associative = less frequently autonomous = infrequently
what is non-verbal extrinsic feedback?
- communicated to the performer without using words
- Gestures, body language, posture, facial expression, hand signals
- reinforce the verbal communication
what is verbal extrinsic feedback?
- spoken augmented feedback provided by a coach or similar
what are the characteristics of effective feedback?
- specific, not general
- constructive, not destructive
- directed at behavior which is changeable
- clear and concise
