arousal Flashcards
1
Q
what is arousal?
A
is the degree of stimulation or alertness present in a
performer about to perform a skilled task.
2
Q
how can arousal interfere with performance physically?
A
- interfere with co – ordination by increasing muscle tension in the performer = negative affect on performance.
3
Q
how can arousal interfere with performance mentally?
A
- arousal level affects their ability to concentrate
- under aroused performer = lacks the intensity
- optimally aroused performer = attends only to relevant stimuli
- over aroused performer = a decreased ability to shift their attentional focus
4
Q
what is the inverted ‘U’ hypothesis?
A
- shows the linear relationship between arousal and performance
- Optimal Performance and optimal arousal occurs at this point of the curve.
5
Q
what arousal level does a hard task require?
A
- lower arousal level
6
Q
what arousal level does a simple task require?
A
- higher level of arousal
7
Q
what arousal level does an advanced player need to perform optimally?
A
- higher levels
8
Q
what arousal level does an intermediate player need to perform optimally?
A
- moderate levels
9
Q
what arousal level does a novice player need to perform optimally?
A
- low arousal
10
Q
what are the characteristics of low arousal levels?
A
- low motivation
- lethargy
- apathy
- easily distracted
- indifference to a poor performance.
11
Q
what are the characteristics of high arousal levels?
A
- nervousness / butterflies
- anxiousness
- nausea
- elevated heart rate
- reduced ability to concentrate on relevant stimulus
