Musculoskeletal system Flashcards
what are joints?
Joints are formed when 2 or more bones meet
- are classified according to the amount of movement they allow
what is the origin of a muscle?
- attachment onto the bone that does not move when the muscle contracts.
- proximal end
what is the insertion of a muscle?
- attached to the bone which moves more when the muscle contracts.
- distal end
How do muscles help us to move?
- muscle contracts = it pulls on 1 of the 2 bones to which it is attached, creating movement.
what is the agonist muscle?
- prime mover
- muscle responsible for the movement
what is the antagonist muscle?
- muscle which relaxes
what is reciprocal inhibition?
- describe the coordinated relaxing of muscles on one side of a joint to accommodate contraction on the other side of that joint.
what are fixator muscles?
- involved in contractions by holding or stabilizing a body part, making it immobile while another body part is moving.
what are synergist muscles?
- assist movement by stabilising and controlling the surrounding muscles to assist the production of smooth, controlled movement.
what are the origin and insertion points of the bicep?
scapula
ulna and radius
what are the origin and insertion points of the triceps?
