Pharmacy Foundations : Basic Science Concepts Flashcards
Substrate (or Ligand)
A substance that creates a signal or produces an effect by binding to a receptor, enzyme or transporter
Endogenous
A substance that is produced by the body
Exogenous
A substance that is produced outside of the body
Agonist
A substance that combines with a receptor to initiate a reaction, can be Endogenous or Exogenous
Antagonist
A substance that reduces or blocks a reactions, can be Endogenous or Exogenous
Induction
When a substance increases the activity of an enzyme
Inhibition
When a substance decreased or blocks the activity of an enzyme
Overview of Nervous System
CNS (inc brain and spinal cord)
CNS controls rest of body by sending signals to PNS
Two main systems of PNS
Somatic (voluntary, muscle movement)
and
Autonomic (involuntary, digestion, cardiac output, BP)
Neurotransmitters
Body’s chemical messengers
Common Neurotransmitters
acetylcholine (ACh)
epinephrine (Epi)
norepinephrine (NE)
dopamine (DA)
serotonin (5-HT)
Primary Neurotransmitter in somatic system?
ACh, binds to nicotinic receptors in skeletal muscles
Parasympathetic nervous system
Rest and Digest
Works by releasing ACh, which binds to muscarinic receptors
Parasympathetic nervous system = SLUDD
Salivation
Lactrimation
Urination
Defecation
Digestion
Sympathetic nervous system
Fight or flight
Works by releasing Epi & NE, which act on adrenergic receptors (a1,b1,b2)
