Vaccine Information Statements
Prepared by CDC, has risk/benefits of each vaccine, should be handed to patient prior to vaccination
Active vs Passive immunity
Active: persons own system produces antibodies to fight infection
Passive:acquired when antibodies are provided from someone else ie Mother to baby or from someone IVIG
Live attenuated (weakened) vaccine info
produce strong immune response, contraindicated in immunocompromised/pregnant patients
made up of weakened virus or bacterium, have ability to replicate
Inactivated vaccines info
Made up of killed virus/bacterium
often a “booster” is required, immunity not as strong as “live vaccine”

When should live vaccines be held until in children?
held until 12 months old
Live vaccines and TB skin test?
- give vaccine same day as test
- wait 4 weeks after vaccine for test
- give test first, then wait 48-72hrs for vaccine
