4 Big Traits of Personality Disorders
Not just traits - pervasive and inflexible
Impaired sense of self-identity
Failure to develop effective interpersonal functioning
Cluster A Personality Disorders (what they are + 3)
Odd or Eccentric: Paranoid, schizoid, and schizotypal
Cluster B Personality Disorders (what + 4)
Dramatic, Emotional, Erratic: Antisocial, borderline, histrionic, and narcissistic
Cluster C (what + 3)
Anxious or Fearful: Avoidant, dependent, and obsessive compulsive
Paranoid PD
Distrust and suspiciousness w/ self as blameless - not full delusional. Often suspect cheating and shit
Schizoid PD
Detachment from social relationships and restricted range of expressions (flat affect) - basically just prefer being alone, like lighthouse worker
Schizotypal PD
Discomfort w/ social interactions and relationships w/ a huge element of eccentricity - think they’re hobbits and shit. Odd thinking/speech and impaired reality
Schizotypal Family History and Treatment
Schizophrenics more likely to have 1st deg relatives w/ SPD. May benefit from low doses of 2nd gen antipsychs or antianxiety agents
Antisocial PD
Pattern of disregard for and violation of rights of others (killers, liars, etc)
Antisocial Physiological Findings and Treatment Problem
Depressed 5HT, and lower = aggression. Difficult to treat bc patients just don’t give a shit, not motivated to change
Borderline PD
Unstable pattern of being: affect regulation, interpersonal relations, everything. Always need attention, interpret everything as abandonment, destroy shit if feel slighted. Aspects of hypomania, but entire pattern of being
Borderline PD Hallmark Defense Mech, Cause, and Treatment
Splitting
Early trauma like abuse/neglect (didn’t receive right comforting/discipline)
ONLY PD w/ verified treatment: Dialectical behavioral therapy, although antideps/mood stabilizers can help short term too
Histrionic Personality Disorder
Excessive attention seeking. Similar to borderline bc manipulative and emotional, but better relationships and sense of identity
Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder
Pattern of orderliness and shit. NOT OBSESSIONS OR COMPULSIONS. Can have “too high” standard of ethics or morals, like Lord Stannis Baratheon
